Under the Pepper Tree

Another hidden gem.
We stopped in the little village of Sivas, just outside Matala on the south coast of Crete and found Kosta's Kafenion

A beautiful tree shades the tables

Nearby we could see pigeons in their pigeon holes!

The Kafenion is just off the village square

Traditional courtyards nearby

We sat in the shade, not knowing what kind of tree it was

Books on the history and nature of Crete arrived with our coffee.

Inside the walls are filled with icons and pictures

Coffee made in the traditional way

This 150 year old chair is not broken. It is from the Turkish era when the men sitting down wanted easy access to the pistols and knives in their belts - hence no arm on one side!

We discovered that the tree was a "Pink pepper tree"

Lovely and shady

The peppers were turning pink

Bouganvillea across the road

Some of the old houses show the signs of the Turkish occupation - this house has a cross signifying that a Christian family lived here. Some others will have signs showing Muslim occupants

Kosta gave us some peppers from the tree to bring home. We had pink pepper marinaded salmon for tea. Recipe tomorrow!
