I have often mentioned the old bakery at Georgioupolis and its delicious smokey bread, made in the traditional woodturning oven
This bakery was started in 1948 by two brothers - Manousos and Ioannis Foundoulakis and was the first of it's kind. In those days most houses in the area had their own woodburning ovens. They made the bread by hand with a long proving time.
Now after more than 60 years of continual work the oven needed some upkeep.
The "plates' that make up the oven are stone made from volcanic ash from Santorini
This means they can endure high temperatures and hold in the heat
No this is not potholing! It is the builder crawling in to make repairs!
Repairs done it is business as usual
The reputation of the bakery precedes it all over Crete and Athens
They also make tasty paximadi
Don't miss a chance to try the traditional loaf. Delicious warm, it also keeps well for several days. So on your next visit to Georgioupolis why not buy a loaf?
