If you want to see a real Cretan Cornucopia then a visit to the indoor market - Agora - in the centre of Chania is a must.
Built between 1909 and 1913 and modelled on the covered market of Marseilles it is packed with colorful and delicious things.
Image from Chania Market website
Olives, Olive products including soap and cosmetics and lots of Baklava and Loukoumi ( you probably know it as "Turkish Delight" but shhhhh - don't call it that here!
One wing of the cruciform market is mostly meat and cheese
These days the meat hangs behind glass in refrigerators
Not long ago much of the meat was hung in the open air.
A cheese lovers paradise. Graviera, Anthotiro, Mizithra and much more.
We sampled and bought some Graviera infused with red pepper. Tasty and spicy with a real kick!!
How about some Xinohonros? Made like porridge with sour milk and wheat ( you can eat it like that too) and then dried in the sun and used as a flavoring for soups and stews. A little goes a long way
Ready cooked meals to eat in or take away, using all the freshest ingredients of the market
Stuffed courgette flowers are very tasty
Greek sponges and loofahs
In the bakery - All types of bread and biscuits
Although it was barely 10 am I bought the last multi seed wholemeal loaf in the shop!
Herbs and spices
And then the fish market
Mackerel, sardines, red mullet, smelts, and much more
What shall we buy?
Fabulous tuna
Cuttlefish
Prawns and shrimps
Octopus
I don't even know what these are - except big!
Not forgetting the fruit and veg stalls
Well worth a wander around, you can stop for a coffee in the centre of the market, or try some of the specialities in the little tavernas attached to the fish and meat stalls.
