Visitors to the lovely town of Rethymnon are always struck by its beauty, history, myriad of little lanes and array of shops, cafes and tavernas. Millions of photos are taken of the lighthouse, the harbour and the historical fountains and the fortress. What we tend to forget to do is to look above the shop level.
Let's start with a typical view of the lighthouse - pretty but just "normal".
But look at this first floor…
Living above the shops...
I love these fans
I must pop in and ask where they got them - look to be Indian
Lovely old sign outside a traditional kafenion
Bougainvillea tracing a pathway in the sky from balcony to balcony
Oops!
A lovely ornate wooden "bay window"
Views on three sides from this living room
Old instruments above a music shop - the precursors to the guitar.
Look up above the Roman fountain!
Living areas, church and lantern against the sky
The fortress lookout tower above the town
Looking down a lane to see the top of the minaret.
Next time you go to town - look up!
