Psaros Taverna, Almyrida

On  a dull Sunday at the beginning of the tourist season, we visited the little seaside village of Almrida and ate in the newly refurbished "Psaros" taverna. Although I have lived nearby for many years I had never eaten here and had heard mixed reviews in the past, but the general consensus seemed to be that the "new" Psaros was a place not to be missed.

The taverna is right on the seashore

The new decor is bright and airy with a nautical feel

The inside has also been refurbished, giving opportunity for winter opening.

We particularly liked the glass topped recesses in the tables with the decor of flotsam and a bottle of wine.

Were the shelves behind the bar built around the logs or vice-versa?

Bright, light, simple, effective. Even on a dull day.

A huge wood burning stove for cold days - worth investigating out of season.

An extensive menu including a large selection of fresh fish. We particularly liked the look of the Tuna Steak and will have to visit on another occasion to try it. We shared two salads, one portion of fava, one of  sausages and one of chicken and mushroom risotto as starters and sampled four main dishes along with 3 litres of wine between 6 of us.

Our party of 6 was not looking for fish and chose from the other dishes, fresh local ingredients cooked with a modern twist.

The "Psaros" salad was delicious. It included bacon and strawberries an unusual combination with worked really well and was served in a tasty parmesan basket. ( In fact we had two and scraped the plates!)

Local sausages cooked in a balsamic sauce

Tasty chicken and mushroom risotto

Melt in the mouth pork with caramelized onions

Tender chicken with lemon

Melt in the mouth lamb shank with roast baby potatoes

"Yia Yia's" home made cake

Nicely presented fruit platter

Fred had help testing the Tsigoudia (raki)
