Never on Sunday

Last week we attended an very interesting evening at "Hasomeri" in Vamos

For those of you who do not know this venue, it is a tiny kafenion tucked away in the old part of Vamos. It's name means "Dalliance" or "Wasting time" or "Loafing" - there is no direct translation - but you get the gist!

"Hasomeri" specialises in Music, Art and cultural events.

The occasion we attended was an evening focusing on how much Greece has changed over the last 60 years. During the event we were served a meal of typical recipes from the 50's/60's
Tomato Salad and wine

Fava ( split pea puree)

"Horta" - wild greens, this particular one was Stamnagathi

Bean salad with spring onions and parsley

Dried salted mackerel strips

Cod "Plaki"with tomatoes and onions

Fresh fried Anchovies
We also enjoyed also "Kritharaki"- barley shaped pasta in tomato sauce, Spinach pie and finally Semolina Halva

After the meal, Georgios, despite only that afternoon having returned from taking a group of travellers for a tour of the Peloponnese islands,  gave us a very interesting talk about the changes in social attitudes, historical cliches, fashion, food and politics over the last 60 years.

We finished the evening with a showing of the famous film "Never on Sunday" starring Melina Mercouri
