Wicked Lunch at Kokkinos Pirgos

Kokkinos Pirgos is just outside Tymbaki on the south coast - on the way to Matala
We stopped on the way to the festival and enjoyed the lunch so much we stopped and had the same on the way back. ( Yes the same last year!) Not a lunch if you are on a diet, but once a year can be forgiven!

We have a favourite taverna

Just by the harbour

Lovely views and boats to watch

and the best lunch around....
We had to try the salad with Jack Daniels sauce!

Yes there is a salad under that cheese!

Then for the main course - just one between us...

Red florentine peppers, stuffed with mizithra cheese, covered in bacon and a spicy tomato sauce

A mixture of four different types of cheeses and a bubbly crusty cheese topping

All gone... now back to the diet!

Komos - History by the sea

Komos is a largely unspoiled stretch of sand, mainly because it's development is hampered by a large archeological site

Komos was a Minoan port serving the nearby settlements of Faistos and Gorton

It had large buildings and temples as well as the usual buildings associated with a port

It was a large settlement

The nearby beach is long and sandy, with a couple of small tavernas on the Matala side

The site is not currently open to the public unfortunately

Matala unplugged!

Many of you know Matala, especially during the music festival. Here is an alternative look, out of season.

A reminder of Summer

The same beach this week!

Packed with music lovers

Now a few people walking the dog

Hot hot hot!

Wrap up warm for your stroll

The busy lanes are now deserted

Even "The Mermaid" is closed, but there are a couple of places open for coffee or a souvlaki

Time to enjoy the peace and quiet and imagine what Matala was like in the '60's when the hippies were living in the caves
