Snow, rainbows and theatrics!

After a beautiful sunny day on Christmas day we are now into snow and ice - yes still in Crete!

A rainbow brightens the glowering sky

And meanwhile something else to brighten your weekend....

Set going up for the "Toneel" play "Anyone for breakfast?"

Who is the mystery flower seller?

Who is the man on a camel - and what is he doing with that banana!

To find out come along to Vamos

Birthday at Parasia Rakadiko

Yesterday was my birthday and although there were many events going on I plumped for a more intimate evening, a visit to Parasia Rakadiko just outside Vamos

Being a Saturday it had live Greek music with Menelaus Paterakis and Tasos Sitarenios

All the old songs, that you know the tunes even if you do not remember the words - You can see a video at the end of the blog to get a taste of it.

We had our own private balcony overlooking the musicians

Fred tested the Raki

and then because there was also honey raki on the table he tasted that too!

Toasted bread and dips were brought to the table along with the two types of raki while we were choosing our selection.

Arpaki - smoked pork

Parasia salad

Fried mushrooms

Pork and celery

with the ubiquitous chips

A veritable feast. We remembered that last time we visited we had over ordered  so we only ordered one main course to share.

Three types of dessert appeared as if by magic

The house wine was delicious

A group of young people arrived and enjoyed the music, joining in the singing

and dancing.. Click on the videos to hear and see the fun.
A lovely birthday evening

You may like to know:

Service: Friendly and efficient.

Type of food: Tasty traditional dishes - and a little more

Prices, Very good value for money

"Star ratings"- on the "Guzunder" scale 6.5.
- Basic but clean,   lock on gents not working, toilet seats present, paper and paper towels available

Raki on the Richter scale 8. Quite a kick! Honey raki for the more sweet toothed was smoother.

Both plain and honey raki on table when we arrived and refilled at regular intervals during the evening. Extra wine on the house and three desserts to share between two at the end of the evening

Would we return? Yes. Can we go tomorrow?

Early (ish) morning coffee in Vamos

At the start of a lovely Autumn day we decided to meet for coffee in Vamos, after my first shift on the school bus.
The plateia was peaceful and traffic free

A few people collecting bread and water

All quiet

We sat in 'Mackies' and ordered a frappe and a Greek coffee. We did not require the famous "Mackies Meatballs" for breakfast.

Mackie makes his Greek coffee the old way over a low heat rather than heating it with steam so it has a good taste

Opposite the cafe, Georgias store and the Pharmacy were already open.

A van selling tools and household implements stopped to show his wares in the plateia - but it was too quiet!

An elderly lady, having completed her shopping makes her way home

Fred enjoying the peace and quiet, watching the village come to life ( Yes with a raki too!)

A typical view in Vamos - a car stopped in the middle of the road! ( the picture does not show the cars and bus heading down the hill towards it!)

The lion looks out to the mountains

Years ago it had a light. When Christos was a little boy, and his father worked out of an office opposite, he loved to look at the lion.

It was placed there many years ago, to always look to the mountains….

Clouds

The weather over the last week has been changeable. So  changeable in fact that all of these photos were taken at the same time from the same place just looking in different directions. You would think they were different days.
The cloud formations have been fabulous and all sorts of shapes can be seen in them. Some glowering, some light and fluffy, some altering as you watch. Take a look.. and two songs to enjoy too which I think are appropriate.. just listen to the words…

Towards Vamos  glowering but with a silver lining

Over Akrotiri- what can you see?

Hmmm Looks as if Kefalas is being bombed!

.. or a major forest fire? Fortunately just the clouds.

Layers of cloud out to see past Drapanos

The sun is trying to shine through

On the other side of the house a few scattered clouds in a blue sky

Kefalas ridge

Is that a ship?
